Hainan Island, lying south-west part off the coast of Guangdong Province, is the secound largest island in China. It covers an area of 33,920 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 5,806,600 (including the HAN, LI, MIAO AND HUI nationalities). It is well known for its palm-fringed beaches, luxuriant forest, and exotic tribal communities and is known as “The Bright Pearl of the South China Sea”.
The history of the island dated back to the STONE AGE when the ancestors of the Li Minority Group of China resided along the coastal area. At that time, their main livestocks are fishing & farming and it was a female dominating society. However, HAINAN in the present day attracts most tourist with its natural and beautiful scenery in a tropical-subtropical environment. The annual mean temperature is 23-25 degree C.
Some of the special splendours are Dongshan Ridge, Deer Returning Point, End Of The Earth, Monkey Island, Tea and Rubber Plantation of Fung Lai, etc. The Dadonghai Beach in the vicinity of Sanya City is a good place for all year-round resort and swimming. It is an unique experience to explore the social customs of the Li and Miao Minorities when visiting their homes.
Hainan – Haikou, capital city, consists of two municipalities and 16 countries. The government’s office is in Haikou city which is the political, economic and cultural centre of the island. It is a beautiful seashore city with flower-sand trees blooming all year round. There are much to be discovered in this recently open tourist area of China.
